The twelve scenes illustrating the Twelve <em>Articles of the Christian Faith<\/em> were painted in the vaults by Lorenzo di Pietro, known as &#8220;Vecchietta&#8221;, between 1447 and 1450. Each segment of the vault contains the depiction of one Article and is accompanied by an apostle in the bottom right-hand corner and a prophet in the bottom left-hand corner, identified by the inscription in the scroll that each figure holds in his hand.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1657707923886{padding-bottom: 20px !important;background-color: #f7f7f7 !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">After completing the frescoes in the vaults, Vecchietta moved on to the apse. On the triumphal arch framing the apse he painted the <em>Assumption of the Virgin in Glory with Angels<\/em>; on the lower part of the apse, the <em>Annunciation<\/em>; and on the sides, two scenes from the <em>Passion<\/em>of Christ: the <em>Flagellation<\/em>and the <em>Ascent to Calvary<\/em>. The three segments of the apse proper were frescoed by Matteo Lambertini in 1447 with the <em>Agony in the Garden<\/em>, the <em>Crucifixion<\/em>and the <em>Deposition in the Tomb<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Benvenuto di Giovanni<\/strong> painted the <em>Miracles of St. Anthony of Padua<\/em> on the end wall of the north aisle in circa 1460, while Pietro di Francesco degli Orioli painted the<em>Washing of the Feet<\/em> in the south wall lunette in 1489.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; gap=&#8221;10&#8243; item=&#8221;mediaGrid_Default&#8221; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1768305762690-40d1e3288e3557b2448b71a8306e5f11-1&#8243; include=&#8221;32445,32446,32447,32448&#8243;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"brand font-w900 p_t_b_20\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #a57704;\">Baptismal font<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h1>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"m_bottom_50\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Pride of place in the interior of the Baptistry goes to the <strong>Baptismal Font<\/strong>, a magnificent creation in marble, bronze and enamel to which the greatest sculptors of the age, including Giovanni di Turino, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello and Jacopo della Quercia, all contributed between 1417 and 1431. The font consists in a hexagonal basin adorned with six gilded bronze panels depicting scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist alternating with statues of the virtues, two of which \u2013 <em>Faith<\/em>and <em>Hope<\/em>\u2013 are by Donatello. The most representative scenes include Lorenzo Ghiberti&#8217;s <em>Baptism of Christ<\/em> cast in 1427, an elegant and sophisticated scene with a painterly quality and a sense of perspective achieved thanks to his adoption of the &#8220;stiacciato&#8221; (very flat, low) relief technique. The cycle is completed by a celebrated relief cast by Donatello in 1427 depicting the <em>Feast of Herod<\/em>, the most moving scene of all thanks both to the dramatic nature of the subject matter itself and to the panel&#8217;s superb formal qualities.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_masonry_media_grid gap=&#8221;10&#8243;
